Meet Allison

Hi. I’m Allison. I have been working with families around pregnancy, birth and postpartum in the Madison area for over a decade. I count it as an immense privilege to have held space for so many parents to do the hard work of labor, birth, breastfeeding and life.

My journey in midwifery began in rural Guatemala where I lived and worked with a traditional Mayan midwife. Here I attended my first birth. I am forever grateful to the women who invited me into their homes and built a foundation of understanding of home based care as fundamental, high quality, and celebratory. I attended nursing school at UW-Madison and never left this vibrant city. During my years as a registered nurse, I worked in the pediatric intensive care unit, postpartum, and labor and delivery. I went on to attend midwifery school at Frontier Nursing University, the oldest nurse-midwifery program in the United States with a rich history of serving the underserved in Appalachia through home visits. I earned my credential as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant in 2018. In my work as a nurse-midwife and IBCLC, I have had the great joy to catch babies, watch people become parents, and partner with families in the journey of breastfeeding. As a Norwegian proverb says, "the greatest joy is to become a mother, the second greatest is to be a midwife." I have two delightful daughters. My oldest was born on a long awaited Sunday afternoon, direct OP, after a marathon labor. My youngest was born in a hurry on an unusually warm and sunny December morning. I was fortunate to receive postpartum care in my home from a wise midwife whom I admire greatly. I have been the new mama, the scared mama, the exhausted mama, the my-birth-didn't-go-how-I-planned mama. I know how much this care matters! When I am not getting fired up about reclaiming postpartum, I enjoy spending time with my husband and daughters, exploring the shores of the great lakes, practicing my Spanish, treasure hunting at auctions and flea markets, swimming, camping, reading, and keeping twenty six tabs open on my laptop.
